James W. ‘Jim’ Norman IV

Jim’s extraordinary professional accomplishments began with the fact that he grew up in a family of lawyers. Jim’s father was one of the very first administrative law judges hired by the newly formed Texas State Office of Administrative Hearings in 1991, and the first Texas attorney to become board certified in Administrative Law. Jim’s sister also practices law in Austin.

Jim initially went in an entirely different direction, first with a prestigious appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1986. After graduating from the Academy in 1990, he entered active duty and completed U.S.A.F. pilot training in 1991. Jim then began his Air Force career as an instructor pilot, first teaching student pilots in Undergraduate Pilot Training, then training officers who were already pilots to be instructors. Thereafter, Jim flew as a pilot with Southwest Airlines for eight years, including as a Captain. Jim entered the University of Texas School of Law in 2009, graduating in 2012.

Jim’s path to becoming one of Austin’s most respected and inclusive attorneys practicing probate and estate planning, as well as handling fiduciary administrations, therefore began not in a law library, but in the cockpit of an aircraft. Through his years of experience as a military and commercial pilot, Jim developed exceptional qualities that now define his welcoming legal practice: unwavering attention to detail, calm decision-making under pressure, and the ability to navigate complex situations with both strategic precision and genuine warmth.

His unique background shapes not just how Jim approaches legal practice, but how he connects with clients from all walks of life. Aviation taught him that every passenger matters equally, that diverse crews work best together, and that trust is built through consistent excellence and respect. Today, his clients benefit from a perspective forged through thousands of hours managing high-stakes situations where preparation, precision, and clear thinking make all the difference – delivered with the understanding that every family’s story is unique and valuable.

The transition from aviation to probate and estate planning law wasn’t just a career change – it was a natural evolution of Jim’s commitment to service and protection for everyone in our community. Where he once ensured the safety of all passengers and crew regardless of who they were, he now safeguards the interests of all families navigating some of life’s most challenging moments. The same steady hand that guided aircraft through turbulent skies now guides clients through the complexities of estate planning and probate and guardianship processes with compassion and understanding.

In his spare time, Jim is very active in St. David’s Episcopal Church in Downtown Austin, having served in many positions including Church Treasurer. While working at the State Bar of Texas, he helped edit the Texas Probate Manual, a singular and uniquely valuable reference manual, for which Jim was part of the team that for the first time took the manual online. Jim’s many interests include running and traveling with his daughters to exotic lands to discover their Norman ancestors.
