Love is in the air this week at the Historic Millett’s Opera House (110 East 9th Street, downtown), a portion of which has been leased to The Austin Club since 1981. The Millett’s Opera House Foundation’s Executive Director, Ken Richardson, was on hand at this past weekend’s St. Valentine’s Sunday Brunch (pictured above). He took the opportunity to provide some background on the organization and buliding to Fowler Family Foundation Executive Director Robert Hoofman.

The Opera House Foundation owns the historic building and is a Texas nonprofit organization and tax exempt 501(c)3 charitable corporation. The original Opera House was built by city father, Captain Charles F. Millett, in 1878 and was designed by leading architect Frederick E. Ruffini. When completed, the opera house was second in size and grandeur only to the Galveston Opera House with 800 moveable seats, a balcony, private boxes and an exquisite hand-painted ceiling – a portion of which now hangs in the club’s House Conference Room. The nonprofit is a member of the Austin Museum Partnership and participates annualy in Austin Museum Day, in addition to offering a virtual tour available anytime online.

The building itself is a registered historic place and Texas Historic Landmark. Richardson, a veteran club and historic building manager, welcomes the public to brunch every Sunday and enjoys talking with guests about the building. If you have not tried Sunday Brunch at Millett’s Opera House, your life is incomplete. You can learn more about brunch and other events by following The Austin Club on Facebook.
